GOAL: This first segment of the core course aims to give the participant a basic grounding in physical organic chemistry, particularly structure-property relationships. The second segment of the course aims to use quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics to look at spectroscopy, kinetics, and thermodynamics.

GRADING in this course will be determined based the following criteria:

  1. For the first section, the highest three grades out of four quizzes given during the recitation sections on 17 September, 1 October, 15 October, and 29 October. These constitute 30% of the course grading.
  2. For the second section, the highest three grades out of four quizzes given during the recitation sections on 12 November, 19 November, 3 December, and during the last day of class on 13 December. These constitute a further 30% of the course grading.
  3. Short  project writeups will be worth up to 35% of the total course grade.  Preparation and format for these will be discussed primarily in the recitation sections.  It is your responsibility to be present at the recitations to get appropriate information, feedback, assignments, and due dates.  Further details will be given as the course proceeds.
  4. Approximately 5% of course value will be placed on student attendance and participation throughout the course.
