will begin on February 6. See the lab schedule on the Lab Website and determine
when you should attend your first lab and report to GSMN 57. You are required to print Experiment 1
(on the website). and have it with you when you report to your
first laboratory. To prepare for your first laboratory, you should
a. Read the Lab Policy
b. Read the Safety Rules
c. Do the practice Pre-Lab Quiz to prepare you for the
quiz that you will take at the beginning of the lab.
d. Purchase Safety Glasses at the University Store and
bring them to all of you lab meetings.
e. Purchase Masterlock #1525 at the University Store and
bring it to your first Laboratory meeting.
The lab component comprises 20% of your overall course
grade. In order to pass the course you
must obtain a passing grade in the laboratory. In order to obtain this grade

laboratory. It is located in Goessmann
Laboratory, room 152, and is staffed with chemistry graduate students and/or
chemistry faculty. Feel free to come in and study, work on OWL homework
assignments, prepare for laboratory, and meet others who are also taking
general chemistry. There are
approximately 50 Power Macintosh and Pentium computers, and two laser printers
in the Center. General Chemistry students may use these for chemistry related
work. Login procedures are posted at
each computer

OWL (Online developed over the last 2 Web-based Learning) is an electronic
homework and tutoring system years as a joint project between the Chemistry and
Computer Science Departments at the University of Massachusetts. Within OWL there is an extensive set of
questions covering General Chemistry course material. You are rostered into the
OWL system when you register for General Chemistry.
Username =
eight digit student number..
Password = last name. This is NOT case sensitive.
If you have 2 words in your last name, such as 'van
Allen', enter 'vanallen', no spaces or hyphens.
You
will be given an OWL assignment when appropriate. Each time you try a
particular assignment, you should see a different, but similar set of
questions. Feedback is given after you
answer each question. This makes OWL an
ideal tool to use to study for exams. Many students who have used OWL in the
past have stated that working through the OWL assignments is the best and
easiest way to learn chemistry and obtain high grades in the course. OWL can be
accessed from any computer connected to the internet, on-campus or off, at the
web site www.chem.umass.edu/genchem. OWL
only works with internet browsers Internet Explorer 4 or above, or Netscape 3
or above. If you do not have a personal
computer, all of the public computer labs on campus can be used to access OWL
(http://www.oit.umass.edu/), as can the Chemistry Resource Center. If you have trouble logging in to the
system, click on the "Login Trouble" button and fill out the form. If
you have trouble configuring your internet browser, go to the OIT Help desk in
LGRC A109.
The
OWL assignments will be stated on the lecture outlines and each will be accompanied
by a deadline. To obtain OWL extensions beyond
the deadline you must report to my office (1239 LGRT) and provide the OWL
assignments that you need extended. Bonus points will be
awarded if you never ask for an OWL extension.
The OWL assignments are labeled Required or Optional You will be graded only on the required
assignments but you are encouraged to
look at the optional assignments. Everyone will be allowing to miss
approximately five OWL assignments.
5. .See regulations on "Academic
Honesty" in the Student Handbook, "Undergraduate Rights &
Responsibilities". The bottom line is that dishonesty is NOT
tolerated.
6. Policy
for an Incomplete grade. Students who are unable to complete course
requirements within the allotted time because of severe medical or personal problems may request an incomplete
from the instructor of the course. Incompletes are warranted only if a
student is passing the course at the time of the request and if the course
requirements can be completed by the end of the following semester.
7. Make-up examinations will be given to
students with legitimate excuses such as sickness, irreconcilable conflicts,
official university functions etc. Make-up exams are NOT GIVEN because the
student did poorly on the original exam.
8. Some of the material in the course is
available on the internet.
Laboratory
experiments: www.chem.umass.edu/genchem
. You will find my website also at this address.
9. Bonus
Questions There
will be some challenging questions that will be assigned as “Bonus Questions”.
These can improve your grade but you will not be penalized if you do not do
these questions.
10. Pseudo Honors Section I will present a special section
for those students that would like a more in-depth discussion of some the
topics that are taught in chemistry 111. Attendance is optional. I will not
assign any extra work in this section. I will ask those interested to contact
me and then I will assign a room and meeting time, which will be once a week.
