A tutorial on the thermodynamics of liquid-liquid phase separation in model biological membranes (GUVs). Serious students of cell membranes should read this.
Baumgart et al.(2007) Large-scale fluid/fluid phase separation of proteins and lipids in giant plasma membrane vesicles. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:3165–3170. This paper provides evidence that the lipids in cell membranes are able to produce liquid-liquid phase separation.
Groves & Kuriyan (2010) Molecular mechanisms in signal transduction at the membrane. Nat Struct Mol Biol 17:659-665. A relatively recent review that includes cell interactions with micropatterned membrane surfaces.
