INTERPRETING A PROTON NMR SPECTRUM

(TWO TYPES OF PROBLEMS)

(TYPE 1): GIVEN A STRUCTURE, PREDICT THE SPECTRUM. INCLUDE ALL 4 FEATURES OF THE NMR SPECTRUM

(1) IDENTIFY ALL SETS OF EQUIVALENT H'S AND LABEL THE SETS WITH LETTERS (A,B,C,D, ETC).

(2) WRITE DOWN THE APPROXIMATE CHEMICAL SHIFTS OF EACH SET.

(3) FIRST DRAW THE SPECTRUM WITHOUT SPLITTING THE SIGNALS.

(4) COUNT THE NUMBER OF NEIGHBORS OF EACH SET AND USE THE n + 1 RULE TO CALCULATE THE MULTIPLICITY. USING THIS AND THE PASCAL TRIANGLE, REDRAW THE SPECTRUM TO INCLUDE THE SPLITTING PATTERNS.
