Using Chem/BMB's Wireless Network

  • Overview
  • Verifying Your LDAP Credentials
  • Configuring Your Computer

  • Overview

The BMB/Chemistry wireless network is accessible to all faculty, staff, and members of research labs. However, grad students and post-docs need to specifically request wireless access via the HelpDesk. In addition, some faculty and staff can also provide visitors temporary, limited access to the wireless network. Accessing the wireless network requires that you have both:

    1. A valid Chem/BMB LDAP account for which you know the username and password (unless you are a visitor)
    2. A computer with a wireless network card that supports connecting to a WPA or WPA2 802.1X network using TTLS encryption and PAP authentication.
For most users, following the instructions below will determine whether or not you meet these requirements.

    Verifying Your LDAP Credentials

To verify your LDAP username and password, do the following (you may find it helpful to read the instructions first):
    • Click on this link and log in
    • If you can't log in at that screen, you need to talk to the IT Staff to have your password reset.
    • If you can, it's worth checking that your password isn't expiring soon (if it is, reset it.)

    Configuring Your Computer

Be aware that because of the wide variety of wireless network cards and wireless software clients installed on computers, these instructions cannot provide all of the details for configuring your wireless software. You will likely need to figure out for yourself (either by trial and error or by reading your computer's manual) exactly how to find the screens where you will need to enter the appropriate information. Of course, if you reach an impasse and cannot figure out how to configure your computer's particular wireless software, you can send email to the IT Team (it-help@chem.umass.edu) requesting assistance.

    Quick Instructions

Use the following settings to configure your wireless software:

Security Method    WPA or WPA2 (aka WPA Enterprise or WPA2 Enterprise)
    Authentication    TTLS
    Inner Authentication    PAP
    Certificate     none
    Username    (your LDAP username)
    Password    (your LDAP password)

Remember that the field names above may be different on your computer

    Detailed Instructions

    Before you do anything else:

BMB/Chemistry's wireless access is similar to OIT's secure wireless access. In fact, your first step should be to confirm you can connect to OIT's UMASS-SECURE1X network. You may not be able to do this from within LGRT or GSMN (there is insufficient signal) but you can find a strong signal in the LGRC low rise library or the Campus Center.

Go to OIT's website for instructions on connecting to their secure wireless network before you connect to BMB/Chemistry's network. DO THIS FIRST!

If you have trouble connecting to UMASS-SECURE1X, then go to OIT's help desk for assistance. After successfully connecting to UMASS-SECURE1X then you can try to connect to BMB/Chemistry.

    Select Your Operating System

  • Configuring Wireless For Windows 7 and Earlier:

The following instructions assume that you completed the Before You Do Anything Else section above.

Microsoft operating systems only support standards they have authored or co-authored. Open standards, like TTLS/PAP require third party software. If you followed the above instructions, you have already connected your Windows device to OIT's UMASS-SECURE1X network, so you have installed the necessary software (SecureW2)

BE AWARE: Windows Vista often has problems connecting to the wireless network.

    1. DO NOT PROCEED if you have not completed the "Before You Do Anything Else" section above.

    2. Click on Wireless Network Connections in the system tray (bottom right of screen).
    3. Click on Change advanced settings in the left pane.
    4. Click on Wireless Networks tab.
    5. Select BMB or Chemistry in the Preferred Networks list and click Properties (if you do not see BMB or Chemistry in the list, click Add).
    6. In the Association tab:
      • SSID: BMB or Chemistry
      • check: Connect even if this network is not broadcasting
      • Network Authentication: WPA2
      • Data Encryption: TKIP
    7. In the Authentication tab:
      EAP type: SecureW2 EAP-TTLS
    8. Click on Properties, the SecureW2 Configuration application starts up:
      • Click on New in the Profile tab.
      • Name the profile BMB or Chemistry, then click OK. A window pops up to configure this profile:
        • Connection tab: uncheck Use alternate outer identity.
        • Certificates tab: uncheck Verify server certificate.
        • Authentication tab: PAP.
        • User account tab: uncheck Prompt user for credentials and fill in your LDAP username/passwordor the username and password that were given to you specifically to connect to the wireless network (leaving domain empty and uncheck Use this account to logon computer).
        • Click OK to close the profile editor
      • Click OK to close the SecureW2 app.
    9. Uncheck both "Authenticate as computer" and "Authenticate as guest"
    10. In the Connection tab: uncheck the box so Windows will not automatically connect to the BMB or Chemistry wireless network when you are in range.
    11. Click OK to accept the configuration for BMB or Chemistry.
    12. Click OK on the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.
You can now connect to the BMB/Chemistry wireless network.
