Figure 1: The synthetic strategy for functionalized SAMs

Alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers on gold are of substantial current interest because of their ability to modify the chemical properties of the substrate surfaces to provide a variety of solid-supported molecular devices.

Currently I am working on a divergent synthetic strategy, by making SAMs which display acid fluride-head groups, then reacting with various primary amines, and by making SAMs which display azide-head groups then, converting them to amide-linked recognition elements. The molecular recognition studies of these functionalized SAMs can be done by cyclic votammetry using a self-build set up anaerobic studies in aprotic, organic solvents.
