Applied Mathematics for Physical Chemistry, 2nd Edition

James R. Barrante

This book reviews basics of calculus and mathematics, with an eye towards applications in physical chemistry. Purchase of this paperback book is purely optional.

Grading / Exams

There will be four in-class exams and one final exam. Each in-class exam will be worth 20 points, and the final exam will be worth 40 points. However, the lowest score on the in-class exams will be automatically dropped. Thus 3x20 + 40 = 100 total points. Final course grading will follow A (91-100), AB (86-90), B (80-85), BC (74-79), C (68-73), CD (60-67), F (0-60); for graduate students, there is no grade of CD, thus F (0-67).

Missed exams. There will be no makeups for exams. If you miss an in-class exam, the resulting 0 will be the lowest exam score and will be dropped (only 1!). If you miss the 2nd exam and then on the 3rd exam, your grandmother dies, your brother is getting married, and you have pneumonia, the response will be: "there are no makeups."

Note that grading is not done on a curve. I encourage the formation of study groups and will work with interested parties to set them up. Everyone in the class can get an "A," and that is my goal. Teaching others is the best way to learn the material solidly yourself. Although collaboration in studying is strongly encouraged, exams are to be carried out independently. Cheating on exams will be dealt with according to all applicable University policies.
